AIR Completes 25th Anniversary 'Moon Safari' Tour

French electronic duo AIR has successfully concluded a monumental two-year world tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their iconic debut album, 'Moon Safari.' Spanning 124 shows across five continents, the tour showcased a full performance of the classic album, seamlessly transitioning into selections from their extensive discography. This ambitious outing not only honored their past but also embraced cutting-edge technology, transforming the band’s live experience with an innovative immersive audio setup.

At the heart of this technological advance was in-ear engineer Julien Vouillon, who integrated FLUX:: SPAT Revolution into AIR's monitoring system. This groundbreaking system recreated the studio essence of 'Moon Safari,' allowing each performance to feel unique and true to the band’s original sound. Working alongside team member Florentin Convert, Vouillon developed a MIDI-controlled framework that automated various instruments and outboard processing, ensuring the duo played with the authentic gear utilized in their 1998 recording. However, this meticulous recreation was only part of the experience; Vouillon aimed to make sure that the band felt the acoustics of each venue they performed in.

To achieve this, he designed a sophisticated in-ear mix featuring three virtual rooms—main, stage, and applause—fed by mobile 5.1 surround microphones. This innovative setup yielded a monitor feed rich in spatial depth. Vouillon noted that the core goal of this immersive aspect was to provide a natural mix, enhancing the musicians' perception without overwhelming them. “The aim is to make the mix feel completely natural to the brain,” he stated.

AIR's 'Moon Safari' tour graced stunning venues such as the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, the Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Bowl, Red Rocks, and the Royal Albert Hall. It culminated at Le Grand Palais in Paris, where the band performed alongside a 43-piece orchestra. This tour marks a milestone not only in AIR’s career but also produced a historic live album recorded during the concert at the Odeon—this live release was directly developed from that immersive in-ear feed, signifying a deep connection between the band's studio and live performance worlds.
