Beatport Bans AI-Generated Music to Preserve Human Creativity

In a decisive move, Beatport has updated its Content Guidelines to prohibit fully or majority AI-generated music from its platform. This comes as the company enhances its partnership with music fraud detection firm Beatdapp, leveraging technology designed to identify AI-generated tracks across its extensive catalog. As a result, any tracks that fall into this AI-generated category will be withheld during the ingestion process, and rightsholders will receive direct notifications, ensuring transparency regarding the status of their music.

While fully generated tracks are being banned, music that is created with AI assistance will still be allowed on Beatport, as long as it remains majority human-made. Those tracks will be tagged at the point of ingestion, providing Beatport’s curation team with better insight for reviewing and promoting the diverse range of music available on the platform. According to Beatport CEO Matt Gralen, the company aims to serve DJs and support artists while acknowledging that there is a fundamental difference between tools that assist human creation and systems that attempt to replace it entirely.

The announcement follows a user survey indicating that 60% of respondents are unwilling to feature AI-generated tracks in their DJ sets, with a sizeable 77% expressing a preference for music created by human beings. Conversely, the topic of AI in music creation generates a spectrum of opinions within the artist community itself. Notable figures like Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk have expressed skepticism towards the creative use of artificial intelligence, citing a deeper, more meaningful relationship with creation that does not involve AI. In contrast, Benny Benassi is open to collaboration with technology, believing that it should be integrated into the creative process alongside human intuition.

Beatport’s policy aligns with a growing industry trend as other platforms such as Bandcamp and Tidal also tighten their regulations concerning generative AI. Bandcamp’s “Keeping Bandcamp Human” policy, introduced earlier this year, outright bans music that is significantly AI-generated, while Tidal has begun tagging such tracks and withholding associated royalties. However, Beatport stands out by preventing AI-generated tracks from entering the platform entirely, thereby ensuring that human creativity remains safeguarded and celebrated.

The collaboration between Beatport and Beatdapp, which initially started with a focus on detecting streaming fraud, is now set to tackle unauthorized AI content. Beatdapp’s technology enhances transparency in the world of generative AI, prioritizing the preservation of human artistic expression while addressing concerns about music authenticity in an increasingly digital landscape.
