Polyend Launches Innovative MIDI Controller 'Keys'

Polyend has officially introduced 'Keys,' a unique mechanical keyboard that doubles as a MIDI controller, aiming to bridge the gap between typing and music production. The innovative design incorporates a three-octave piano keyboard layout, featuring number and function rows for musical performance, alongside nine rotary controls equipped with a built-in display for real-time feedback.

Making its debut at Gamescom in Cologne—an unconventional choice for a music hardware exhibition—Polyend's 'Keys' indicates an intriguing target audience. The product operates seamlessly as a standard mechanical keyboard while allowing users to play notes and record melodies using the same keys they type with. Constructed from a single piece of aluminum, the keyboard employs hot-swappable Kailh low-profile switches, enabling users to replace switches effortlessly without soldering, all while boasting adjustable backlighting.

Its rotary controls can be customized to send MIDI Continuous Controller (CC) messages, and default to familiar computer functionalities such as volume adjustment, scrolling, and brightness control when not in music mode. This versatile design diverges from traditional control surfaces, which focus primarily on musical functions and occupy considerable desk space—a problem that 'Keys' intends to resolve. By catering to a laptop-centric workflow, 'Keys' aligns with the growing trend of producers, like Fred again.., who rely on laptops for music production.

Polyend has incorporated a USB port and a TRS MIDI output, allowing for direct connections to external devices. Additionally, 'Keys' supports connectivity via USB or Bluetooth, featuring an internal rechargeable battery for standalone use. Reflecting its user-centric approach, Polyend has announced that the firmware will be open source, facilitating user-driven layout customization, control modes, and even the development of sequencers.

Although the product shows promise, Polyend has emphasized that 'Keys' remains a prototype, with the official release subject to change in terms of functionality, design, and technical specifications. In response to inquiries from producers, the company has confirmed that features such as pressure sensitivity and aftertouch are currently under development and will utilize technology similar to TE KO2 pressure-sensitive film. Following the launch of its hybrid analog-digital drum machine named 'Drums' during Superbooth 2026, 'Keys' solidifies Polyend's commitment to innovative solutions for modern music creators. Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.
