Spotify Introduces AI Personas for Virtual Artists

In a significant move towards enhancing transparency, Spotify will commence labeling artist profiles created by artificial intelligence as "AI Personas". This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the growing prevalence of AI-generated music across streaming platforms. The labeling changes are set to begin mid-September and will primarily focus on artist identities rather than individual songs, indicating a shift in how listeners perceive and interact with music.

Profiles identified as AI-generated will be marked with an AI Persona badge. Additionally, Spotify plans to implement a "Likely AI Persona" label for accounts assessed by a human review team. Artists flagged will also have an opportunity to contest these decisions, thereby adding a layer of accountability and transparency to the process.

The new policy will not only categorize these profiles but also restrict their visibility within Spotify's ecosystem. By default, AI Persona accounts will be excluded from editorial playlists and algorithmic recommendations, like personalized selections such as Discover Weekly. Users can still follow and stream music from these AI artists, but they won't be actively promoted by Spotify’s recommendation systems.

This initiative responds directly to listener concerns regarding the authenticity of AI-generated artists, who may present themselves as real musicians. Spotify clarified that the labels apply exclusively to an artist's public identity and do not extend to musicians who use AI creatively in their music production.

This policy arrives in the wake of extensive discussions surrounding AI-generated personalities in the music industry. One of the notable cases highlighted was Velvet Sundown, an AI artist whose swift rise on streaming platforms raised pressing questions about credibility and musical authenticity. Additionally, Spotify announced plans to empower listeners to report profiles they believe represent AI Personas, further solidifying the integrity of its artist representation. This move aligns Spotify with industry trends, notably following Deezer's lead in detecting and managing AI-generated music, which has rapidly surpassed other genres in daily uploads. This evolving landscape emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between genuine artists and AI identities, crucial for maintaining listener trust and engagement in the digital music space.
