Street Parade Zurich: Medical Treatments and Arrests Report

The recent 33rd edition of the Street Parade in Zurich attracted an estimated 900,000 attendees on a sweltering August day, resulting in a significant increase in emergency medical treatments and arrests. According to the official figures released by the Zurich authorities, emergency medics recorded 906 treatment cases, while police arrested 30 individuals along the parade route. The nature of medical call-outs primarily involved cuts, grazes, and incidents related to alcohol consumption, amplified by the intense heatwave affecting the region.

The city's emergency service, Schutz und Rettung Zürich, had anticipated the demands of such a large gathering, deploying 400 additional staff members, including six first-aid stations, 13 extra ambulances, and emergency physicians, along with the fire department and civil defense backup. Despite the high number of medical interventions, no serious injuries were reported among attendees, reflecting the effective measures put in place to manage the large crowd.

The police reported a range of charges leading to the 30 arrests, including theft, drug trafficking, assault, and violations of the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act. The evening hours saw an uptick in reports of altercations and assaults, but overall, the event was deemed largely safe in comparison to the significant number of participants. Additionally, authorities conducted drug seizures that highlighted prevalent substance use at the event, confiscating over 50 grams of amphetamines, more than 40 grams of ketamine, around 20 grams of cocaine, and over 100 ecstasy tablets. This aligns with emerging trends observed at other major European electronic music festivals throughout the summer.
